Understanding GST in India: Rates, Formulas & Invoicing
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a destination-based, comprehensive indirect tax implemented on July 1, 2017, replacing multiple cascading central and state levies such as VAT, Service Tax, Central Excise Duty, and Octroi. Administered by the GST Council, it unifies the Indian domestic market under a single indirect taxation framework.
The Standard GST Rate Slabs in India
- 0% (Exempt): Essential food items, fresh produce, unbranded grains, milk, salt, and primary healthcare.
- 3% & 0.25%: Precious metals, gold jewellery, and cut/polished diamonds.
- 5%: Household essentials, packaged food staples, rail transport, economy air tickets, and life-saving medicines.
- 12%: Processed foods, business class air tickets, computers, and medical equipment.
- 18% (Standard Rate): Most capital goods, telecommunications, IT software, SaaS, banking financial services, and consumer appliances.
- 28% (Luxury & Sin Slabs): Luxury automobiles, tobacco products, pan masala, and aerated carbonated beverages (often accompanied by an additional GST compensation cess).
The Mathematical Formulas for Adding and Removing GST
1. Adding GST to a Net (Exclusive) Price
Gross Total Price = Net Base Price + GST Amount
Example: Adding 18% GST to a freelance billing invoice of ₹50,000:
GST Amount = (50,000 × 18) ÷ 100 = ₹9,000.
Invoice Total = ₹50,000 + ₹9,000 = ₹59,000.
2. Removing GST from a Gross (Inclusive) Price (Reverse GST)
GST Amount = Gross Inclusive Total - Net Base Price
Example: Extracting 18% GST from a retail bill of ₹59,000:
Net Base Price = 59,000 ÷ (1 + 0.18) = 59,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹50,000.
Extracted GST = ₹59,000 - ₹50,000 = ₹9,000.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is IGST charged instead of CGST + SGST?
Integrated GST (IGST) is charged on inter-state transactions—when the supplier and the recipient are registered in different Indian states or union territories, or when importing goods/services into India. The total tax rate remains identical to CGST + SGST combined.
What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?
Input Tax Credit allows GST-registered businesses to reduce the tax they have already paid on business purchases (inputs) from the tax they owe on their sales (outputs), preventing double taxation.
